Vision Statement – English

At St Francis Primary School, reading is at the heart of our school and our learning. We want the children to learn to love books and leave our school as enthusiastic, independent readers with a life-long love of reading.

They will be enabled to use their reading skills to access all other areas of learning, now and in the future. Through our English curriculum, we teach children the key reading skills they need and apply them to a range of texts across the curriculum.

With the provision of high quality, engaging texts, we strive for the children to become confident, capable and enthusiastic writers with a genuine love of writing. They will be able to use writing to express themselves and communicate with others and they will write independently for a range of purposes.  They will reflect on their own and others’ writing and have an understanding that writing has a real purpose.

We also believe that the ability to speak and listen well is essential for children to be able to articulate their feelings, opinions and ideas while valuing the thoughts and feelings of others: treating others with respect and integrity is a vital part of life long-learning.
